How much is coolant?

Quick answer

Coolant prices depend on spec (OEM-specific vs general), form (concentrate vs premix) and size. We don't publish typical prices because we have no independent, current source. Instead, compare cost per mixed litre or gallon for the exact spec your car needs, and buy only as much as your system capacity requires.

Key takeaways

  • We don't publish price figures without an independent, current source.
  • Concentrate makes about twice its volume at 50/50.
  • OEM-specific formulas can cost more than general-spec products.
  • System capacity (in the manual) sets how much you need for a refill.
  • The cheapest bottle is only good value if it meets your spec.

What affects coolant price

  • Specification: OEM-approved formulations versus general products.
  • Form: concentrate (add water) versus premix (ready to use).
  • Size: larger containers usually cost less per litre.
  • Retail channel: dealer parts counters, auto parts stores, online.
Prices: we haven't found an independent, current source for typical prices, so we don't publish a figure. Get at least two written quotes, or compare current retailer listings for your exact spec and quantity.

How much coolant do you need?

For a top-up, usually much less than a litre or quart. Fill to the cold-full mark. For a full refill, check the cooling system capacity in your owner's manual. A drain-and-fill usually replaces only part of it. See how to add coolant and coolant flush.

Labour costs for coolant service

Shop prices for flushes or exchanges vary by vehicle, region and service type. See coolant flush cost for the factors and the questions to ask.

Common mistakes

  • Buying cheap coolant of the wrong spec. It can cost more later.
  • Buying concentrate and forgetting the water. Factor in distilled water.
  • Overbuying for a top-up. A small premix bottle is often enough.

Concentrate or premix: which is better value?

Concentrate is pure (or nearly pure) glycol with inhibitors and must be mixed with water, usually 50/50. One bottle of concentrate makes about two bottles' worth of usable coolant, so the price per mixed litre is often lower. You also need distilled water, a clean container and a way to measure, and getting the ratio wrong weakens protection.

Premix is already diluted with purified water to the correct ratio. It costs more per litre of usable coolant but is ready to pour and removes the risk of mixing errors. For small top-ups, premix is usually the sensible choice. For full refills, concentrate lets you account for water left in the engine after draining.

How to avoid overpaying

  • Buy the spec your manual lists. A cheaper bottle that doesn't meet it is a false economy.
  • Compare cost per mixed litre, not per bottle.
  • For a single top-up, a small premix bottle avoids leftover concentrate.
  • Check whether your dealer's own-brand coolant is competitively priced. Sometimes it is.
  • Store leftovers sealed and labelled, away from children and pets.

Hidden costs of the wrong coolant

Using a coolant that doesn't match your vehicle's specification can shorten its service life and weaken corrosion protection for aluminium, solder and seals. The resulting problems, such as a leaking radiator, a failing water pump or a blocked heater core, usually cost far more than the coolant itself. Spending a little more on the correct spec is cheap insurance.

Store brand vs name brand

Store-brand coolants can be good value if the label lists your exact spec. Brand names alone don't guarantee suitability for your car, and store brands aren't automatically worse. The spec is what matters.

Why prices vary between stores

Pack size, brand, spec approvals and promotions all play a part. Since we can't verify current prices independently, we don't list them.

More questions answered

Does more expensive coolant protect better?

Only if it meets a spec the cheaper one doesn't. Match your manual.

Is it cheaper to buy in bulk?

Often per litre, if you'll use it before it expires.

Reader questions

Is coolant cheaper online?

Sometimes, but compare spec, size and shipping.

Should I buy the dealer's coolant?

It guarantees the spec. Compare with aftermarket products listing the same spec.

Key point to remember

Value in coolant comes from matching the spec and buying the right amount. A single small premix bottle is often all a top-up needs, while a refill after a flush may need concentrate plus distilled water. Write the spec on your phone or a note in the glovebox so you can buy confidently when you see a deal, and avoid "universal" bottles that don't list your vehicle's requirement.

In practice

In practice, buy the spec first and the price second.

Next step

Note your spec before shopping.

One more tip

Check the bottle's fill date or lot code if it looks old.

Frequently asked questions

How much does coolant cost?

It varies by spec, size and retailer, and we don't have an independent current source. Compare cost per mixed litre for your exact spec.

Is concentrate cheaper than premix?

Often per mixed litre, since you supply the water.

How much coolant does my car need?

Your owner's manual lists the cooling system capacity. A top-up needs much less.
