Aftermarket vs genuine coolants

Aftermarket brands such as Prestone, PEAK, Zerex, Recochem, Comma, Castrol, Shell, Mobil and febi sell coolants that list many spec codes at once. Vehicle makers (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Volkswagen, Tesla, and Motorcraft for Ford, ACDelco for GM and Mopar for Stellantis) sell their own genuine coolant. Their parts pages often give only a part number, because the owner's manual names the coolant directly. See coolant by car make for what each vehicle maker publishes.

How to read a brand page

Each brand page shows the products we list, the chemistries the maker names, the spec codes it lists and how many products list each code, and the fields it leaves unpublished. Approvals are always framed as "meets X per [brand]", with the manufacturer's wording quoted on the product page. A brand with more products is not a better brand. It means we found more product pages with usable data.

Coverage and gaps

We collected these products on 22 October 2026. Some brands publish product data only in JavaScript apps or block automated access. For Zerex and Valvoline we used Valvoline product information sheets instead, and each product page names its source. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo genuine coolants are not listed yet, because we could not find a manufacturer page with product data we could cite. Download the full dataset as CSV or JSON.

When to see a mechanic

If you cannot find your manual's spec on any product, ask a dealer or qualified mechanic rather than choosing by brand or colour.

Frequently asked questions

Which coolant brand is best?

We do not rank brands. The best coolant for your vehicle is one whose maker states it meets the exact spec in your owner's manual.

Are genuine coolants different from aftermarket ones?

Genuine coolants are made to the vehicle maker's own spec. Aftermarket products may state that they meet the same spec. Check the wording on the product page, and your warranty terms.

Why are some brands missing?

We list only products whose manufacturer data we could read and cite. Others will be added as sources become available.
